Strasbourg, 14 September 2022
The European Parliament adopted today its position on the recast of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), backing a stronger and more reliable framework to cut energy use in Europe.
At a moment of rising cost of living, the Parliament’s plenary session supported with a cross–party majority the good report of the Industry committeeon the EED recast. The vote took place just after the State of the Union Address by European Commission’s President von der Leyen where she highlighted the urgency of getting rid of Russian fossil fuel dependency and announced measures to reduce electricity consumption at the national level.
The adopted position of the European Parliament includes an EU energy efficiency binding target of at least 14.5% by 2030, up from 13% in REPowerEU (expressed in a different metric in the approved text). The Parliament also voted to make national contributions binding and to strengthen several provisions of the directive, including the energy savings obligation and the renovation of public buildings (see details in our ITRE vote press release in the notes for editors).
